About Mark

Capacity Consulting was founded by Mark Evans in April 2011 and operated until March 2013 when, following a consultancy contract, he took up a full time executive post as CEO at the NRL club Melbourne Storm where he was central in turning a heavily loss making club into a  financially viable entity . Upon his return to the UK Capacity Consulting became his main focus again in September 2015.

For the previous eleven years prior to launch of Capacity Consulting Mark was CEO at Harlequins FC, an English rugby club competing in the Aviva Premiership. During this time the average attendance for league games at Harlequins grew from under 3,000 to over 12,000 and the season ticket base underpinning that rose from under 1,000 to 7,000.

In 2008 Mark conceived the Big Game concept which involved relocating a league game from Harlequins’ normal home ground (capacity 14,000) to the Twickenham Stadium (capacity 80,000) over the Christmas period. With a radical pricing policy, well directed marketing, significant entertainment on the day and the creation of a specific brand it became a huge success.

Big Game 1 sold out at 50,000 in 2008 when capacity was restricted, Big Game 2 broke the world record for a club game of 76,000 in 2009 and even the worst weather in living memory did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the 74,000 people who turned up in 2010.

The concept and associated campaigns were recognised nationally, winning Best Integrated Marketing Campaign – Sport Industry Awards and 2010 Marketing Campaign on a budget below £500,000 - Marketing Society Awards. Big Game is now in its ninth year of operation.

Before his career in sports administration Mark was Director of Rugby and 1st XV coach at both Saracens and Harlequins where his teams won the Tetley Bitter Cup in 1998 and the European Challenge Cup in 2001 and 2004.
